Storm Eowyn is poised to impact the UK with severe weather conditions starting Friday, January 23, 2025. The Met Office has issued multiple yellow weather warnings as the storm approaches, forecasting winds that could reach 90 mph in some areas.

The storm is expected to land in Ireland late Thursday before advancing across the UK on Friday, bringing significant disruptions and potential hazards.

The Met Office has emphasized the dangers associated with Storm Eowyn, warning of flying debris and damage to structures, which could threaten life. Wind gusts are projected to reach 80 mph along coastal regions and 60 mph inland, particularly affecting Northern Ireland, northern England, northwestern Wales, and western Scotland.

This extreme weather could lead to power outages and travel disruptions across roadways, rail services, airports, and ferry operations.

Met Office spokesperson Andrea Bishop highlighted that the storm will bring very unsettled weather through Friday and Saturday. Initially, strong winds will be felt in the northwestern parts of the UK, accompanied by heavy rainfall. As the storm progresses, snow is also possible along its leading edge, especially in Northern Ireland and New England.

The transition from calm weather earlier in the week to turbulent conditions is attributed to a significant change in atmospheric pressure driven by a powerful jet stream originating from North America. This shift is expected to energize low-pressure systems that will sweep across the Atlantic towards the UK.

The initial calmness will give way to heavy rain and strong winds by Thursday evening, with rainfall accumulations potentially reaching 20-30 mm in western regions. The RAC has cautioned drivers about the risks posed by sudden gusts of wind, particularly for high-sided vehicles, which are more susceptible to being blown off course.

It is recommended that motorists maintain lower speeds and have a firm grip on their steering wheels during adverse weather.

As Storm Eowyn approaches, residents are urged to stay updated on official weather alerts as further details may emerge regarding the storm’s trajectory and intensity. The Met Office will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary.

Storm Eowyn represents a significant weather event for the UK this weekend, with strong winds and heavy rain expected to disrupt daily life. Authorities are taking precautions and advising the public of potential impacts as this storm unfolds.
