Kevin Costner will not be playing John Dutton when he returns to Yellowstone. Known for playing rancher John Dutton in Yellowstone, Kevin Costner will be returning to similar settings this year with a new series that premieres next month. He won’t be playing his well-known character again, though.
Midway through the fifth season of the popular Paramount Network drama, which concluded at the end of 2024, the Hollywood actor departed. He has since been working on his Western franchise, Horizon, and will now serve as the star of a brand-new, three-part Fox Nation series.
Costner will follow a fascinating tale from American history in Yellowstone to Yosemite as part of the streaming service’s America 250 campaign, which will commemorate the USA’s semi-quincentennial in 2026.
The star will explore the history of several of the nation’s most famous national parks in the series, which premieres on February 8. He will follow President Teddy Roosevelt and John Muir’s 1903 Yosemite expedition, learn about the region’s Indigenous American heritage, and investigate other facets of Yosemite’s past.
Viewers will discover how the Roosevelt-Muir expedition helped to create national forests and strengthen the United States National Park system, protecting 230 million acres of land in the process.
According to the Mirror US, Costner is an executive producer of the series through his business, Territory Films, which works with Warm Springs Productions. The premiere of the new series comes almost three years after Yellowstone: One-Fifty, the previous Costner-led docuseries on Fox Nation.
Considering the project, Costner revealed in a press release, “Once in a while, you come across a story that has that truly special mix of elements—it’s stranger than fiction and happens against all odds.
“It results in something that legitimately changes the world for the good, and, most importantly, it all happened.”
“The story of President Teddy Roosevelt and John Muir’s camping trip through Yosemite is one of those truly special ones, and I’m excited to dig into the next chapter of the preservation of the American frontier.”
The release read: “Throughout the voyage, Costner explores the region’s rich Indigenous American legacy, the serendipitous arrival of outsiders in 1850, and how John Muir evolved into a crusader for our wildest places.”
“Through Costner’s perspective, he illuminates the struggle waged by Muir as he contended with the intricate politics of resource management and how Roosevelt’s intervention culminated in the establishment of a more structured National Park System, the creation of 150 National Forests, 5 National Parks, and the preservation and protection of 230 million acres of precious land.”
Those who enjoy Costner’s past works can look forward to Horizon: An American Tale, the second instalment of his Western tale, which will be released in theatres later this year.
Taylor Sheridan’s vast universe is far from over, even though Costner’s involvement with the Yellowstone franchise is over. In February, a second season of the prequel 1923 is anticipated on Paramount.
The story of the Dutton family will also continue into the present day, as Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser will play Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler again in a future spin-off. Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone to Yosemite will debut on Fox Nation on Saturday, February 8. No release date has been set for the UK.
