SpaceX Fuel Dump: On Monday, a SpaceX rocket launch in the United States is thought to have generated a giant light spiral that appeared in the night sky above areas of the United Kingdom. Elon Musk’s space company’s Falcon 9 rocket took off on a classified US government mission at approximately 13:50 local time (17:50 GMT) in Florida. It is a reusable rocket. Following launch, it releases its payload, which is whatever it is carrying to fulfil its purpose (for example, a satellite), and continues its trip into space.
The rocket then does a U-turn back towards Earth. In the process, it ejects any remaining fuel, which, because of the height and the velocity of the rocket, instantly freezes in a spiral pattern.
The frozen fuel is then visible on Earth after being reflected off it. Photographs of the dazzling swirl were taken in England and Wales, and it was also spotted in other regions of Europe.
According to astronomer Allan Trow, it emerged at about 20:00 over the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park in Wales. He mentioned he had seen the event earlier, roughly four years ago.
“But these are pretty rare,” he told the BBC, and agreed the rocket was its likely source.
According to SpaceX, the launch was a National Reconnaissance Office mission of the US government. Additionally, the launch was described as a clandestine mission for the Kennedy Space Centre on X.

As the light travels over the sky in a video that was uploaded to the ECHO, it seems to twirl. When she saw the lights, a woman in Halewood recorded them and forwarded them to the ECHO. A “white swirling galaxy floating” seems to be what she described as the odd lights above her residence.
The lights, she continued, “moved slowly across the sky from the north to the south.” A shooting star-like object flew across the sky after separating from it.
“It will be interesting to see if anyone else has seen it. My son’s friend just messaged to say he was watching it in the sky too, but he lives in Cheltenham!”
Many linked the earlier launch of SpaceX rocket Falcon 9. Taking to Facebook, one confused user said: “Has anyone seen this weird thing travelling slowly across the sky? The spiral clouds expanded and then faded. I’ve heard it could be related to SpaceX.”
Another commented: “Possibly a plane dumped some fuel, it can appear as a vortex-like effect due to low temperatures at altitude and the disturbed air behind the aircraft. Elon Musk sent up another rocket tonight; it was probably a fuel dump from that. SpaceX Falcon 9 NROL-69.”
A third wrote: “Apparently it is the SpaceX rocket that launched, and it’s very rare, but when they dump excess fuel, it causes ice crystals to form and creates a vortex!”
In a post on X, SpaceX said: “Falcon 9’s first stage has landed on LZ-1 in Florida” alongside a video of a rocket landing vertically at a landing zone.”
