Octopus Energy customers in the UK face higher costs on popular EV charging tariffs. The Intelligent Octopus Go and Octopus Go plans have had recent rate hikes. These changes hit EV drivers hard as they charge their cars at home.
Wholesale energy prices spiked due to conflict in the Middle East. Tensions involving Iran pushed gas costs up sharply in early 2026. This forced suppliers like Octopus to adjust tariffs quickly.
The rises came in steps. In February 2026, off-peak rates on Intelligent Go jumped from around 7.5p/kWh to 8p/kWh or higher in some areas. Daytime peak rates climbed to 32p/kWh or more.
Users on forums reported even steeper jumps. One Reddit post noted going off-peak, going from lower levels to 8.5p/kWh. Standing charges also vary by region, adding to bills.
Octopus blamed global events. A company blog linked the surge to the Middle East war’s effects on gas markets. Videos warned of costs like those during the Ukraine crisis years ago.
EV owners feel the pinch most. Intelligent Octopus Go has limited cheap smart charging to six hours nightly since early 2026. This change from longer windows doubles the costs for big-battery cars needing over 10 hours.
A typical driver might pay 100 euros more yearly. For 7000 miles at 0.3 kWh/mile, extra pence per kWh adds up fast. Public charging at 54p/kWh stays pricier, but home savings shrink.
Ofgem’s price cap fell to 1,641 euros from April 2 to June 30, 2026. Octopus kept the standard flexible tariff under it at 1624 euros. But EV-specific plans track wholesale volatility separately.
Not all news is bad. The government cut policy costs by 159 euros per bill in the 2025 budget. This led to some April drops in other tariffs. EV plans saw limited relief amid gas spikes.
Current status shows mixed rates. Off-peak now hovers at 8p/kWh fixed on Intelligent Go, per the Octopus site. Peak at 32p/kWh average. Region matters—Hampshire lower, others higher.
Customers complain online. The Liverpool Echo reported backlash to quick hikes amid the Iran conflict. Some call exit fees a trap despite Octopus’s service reputation.
Octopus urges app use for schedules. It auto-charges when greenest and cheapest. Over 500,000 on smart EV tariffs, half with Octopus.
For UK families with EVs, budgets tighten. The average home uses 2,700 kWh yearly. Night shifts help, but rises offset cap drops.
What next? Analysts predict a July-September cap at 1801 euros, up 10%. Cornwall Insight flags concern if gas stays high.
EV growth claws at costs. Octopus invests in wind, promises long-term value. Switchers get Electroverse discounts.
