A major outage has left Virgin Media customers without internet access and thousands of customers are having trouble connecting to the service. Following an incident that rocked the corporation, Virgin Media consumers are now without internet service. Know more about Virgin Media’s service status here.

Virgin Media’s “intermittent issues” have left consumers without internet access. Since 11 a.m., over 9,000 reports of problems have been submitted.

Virgin Media claims to have resolved a problem that prevented thousands of its customers from accessing the internet. The telecom behemoth apologised to consumers on Monday for “intermittent issues” with its services and stated that there was a “priority” to resolve the problem.

The reason of the problem has not been established by the corporation. According to service status website Downdetector, since 11 am, over 9,000 people have reported problems, with most claiming that their internet services have been impacted.

In a statement, the company said: “We’re aware that some customers are experiencing intermittent issues with their services,” a Virgin Media O2 spokesperson said.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and are working to fix this as a priority.”

A Virgin Media spokesperson said in a statement later on Monday: “We have now fully restored services for all customers, following an earlier outage. We would like to apologise again to customers who were impacted for any inconvenience caused.”

One of the impacted consumers described the connection as “all over the place” on social media, where many others reported problems with their services.

An additional comment said, “Why on a Monday of all days.”

A third asked if the business would pay them back for the data they had to spend on their phones to access the internet. “I hope you’re going to reimburse me for the data I have used today, being with O2 data and having my own Virgin Media broadband down I am using all of my data that I have left… not helpful,” they stated their letter.

In June 2021, Virgin Media and O2 UK merged. In the agreement, Spanish company Telefonica and US media giant Liberty Global, which owns Virgin Media cable TV and broadband, merged to form a £31 billion business.

At the end of its second quarter in 2024, Virgin Media reported having 5.7 million broadband users, many of whom also purchase pay television and mobile services from the company.

The majority of troubles are being reported in a few hotspots around the United Kingdom, as indicated by Downdetector’s outage map.

London is the city with the most number of Virgin Media problems recorded, followed by Plymouth, Manchester, Nottingham, and Birmingham. Problems have also been reported by users in Brighton, Oxford, Cambridge, Norwich, Belfast, and Glasgow.

Smaller hotspots can also be found in the Leeds and Sheffield regions, Dundee, Edinburgh, and Newcastle upon Tyne. Many users claim that they are unable to “even check service status” on Virgin Media’s website because it “doesn’t load probably due to traffic. Users have expressed their frustration with the outage.

While some users complained that they were left in the dark since they couldn’t access Virgin Media’s service checker, others stated that their internet had recovered within 30 minutes of going down.

Many users have also reported experiencing “intermittent and/or slow access to Azure-hosted services” this morning. Microsoft 365, which includes subscription plans that permit the use of Microsoft Office software and cloud-based programs like Skype for Business Server, among others, has also been the subject of issues.
