Lidl has announced the return of its highly popular budget portable air conditioner to its middle aisle, offering consumers an affordable option to combat the current UK heatwave. The product is launching in stores nationwide as high temperatures sweep across large regions of the country, causing a surge in demand that has left online suppliers largely stripped of cooling stock.

Priced at £149, the Tronic 3-in-1 Air Conditioner is hitting shelves on Thursday, 25 June. Given the device’s immense popularity during previous summer rollouts, retail analysts and consumer experts predict the limited stock will sell out rapidly. The low price point positions the supermarket chain aggressively against high-end competitors, with similar portable units from rival brands often retailing between £250 and nearly £600.

The freestanding Tronic model functions by drawing in warm indoor air, cooling it via an internal refrigerant loop, and circulating the lowered temperatures back into the room. It features a triple operating system, allowing it to act as an air conditioner, a traditional cooling fan, or a dehumidifier. Built with transport wheels for easy mobility between rooms, the unit offers two distinct fan speeds. Industry experts expect its specifications to mirror previous iterations, making it ideally suited to handle room sizes ranging from 30 to 45 square metres.

Unlike standard household fans, which only circulate air to create a breeze without impacting the ambient environment, portable air conditioners actively lower room temperatures. However, they do require an exhaust hose to be positioned through an open window to vent the extracted heat outside.

The launch forms part of a broader seasonal cooling rollout by the supermarket. For shoppers seeking cheaper alternatives or additional ways to beat the rising temperatures, Lidl’s middle aisle will also feature products starting from £3.99, including varied fans, a £14.99 air cooler, cooling bedding, pillows, and dedicated cooling mats for dogs. Due to strict stock limits, the appliance and its accompanying range will only be available to purchase in physical stores while stocks last, with no options for online ordering.
