Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and close ally of former President Donald Trump, was shot dead while addressing a campus event at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. He was 31 years old and best known for founding Turning Point USA, a group that mobilised young voters in support of conservative causes.
The shooting happened during Kirk’s “American comeback tour”, which was aimed at energising youth voters ahead of the 2026 elections. He was speaking outdoors in front of over 3000 students when the single gunshot rang out and struck him in the neck.
Video footage showed Kirk responding to a student’s question moments before he was shot. He briefly touched his neck and then collapsed from his chair, causing chaos in the crowd.
Police believe the shooter fired from a rooftop overlooking the courtyard in a targeted attack. Six officers and Kirk’s personal security team were present at the event. The police quickly evacuated the university, advised students to shelter in place, and started searching for the shooter building by building.
Authorities initially detained two individuals for questioning but released them after finding no link to the shooting. As of now, no one is in custody, and officials have not named a suspect. A manhunt is underway, and the FBI is leading the investigation with support from Utah public safety officers. Law enforcement says a “person of interest” has been identified, but details remain scarce to protect the integrity of the inquiry.
Reactions poured in from politicians across America. President Donald Trump called the event a “dark day for America” and praised Kirk for mobilising the youth conservation vote. He ordered American flags to be flown at half-staff in Kirk’s honour. President Joe Biden also condemned the violence and offered condolences to Kirk’s family.
Kirk’s wife, Erika Frantzve and their two children were present at the university but unharmed during the incident. No other injuries were reported.
Charlie Kirk leaves behind a large financial legacy. At the time of his death, his estimated net worth was around $12 million. He earned most of his wealth from Turning Point USA, his podcast, radio shows, speaking fees, and real estate investments, which included multiple luxury properties. Reports also show Krik’s salary at his nonprofit rose sharply in recent years.
Kirk’s assassination has reignited national conversations on political violence and its effects on democracy. Both Democrats and Republicans have condemned the attack, and calls for unity have echoed across Congress and the media.
The shooter remains unidentified, and the investigation is ongoing. The country mourns a controversial but influential figure whose activism made a lasting mark on American politics.
