On Wednesday, April 23, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck Istanbul, Turkey, causing buildings to tremble and a hasty evacuation.
According to the news agency Reuters, which cited Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Turkish city of Istanbul on Wednesday, April 23, causing buildings to tremble and triggering a hasty evacuation.
The story claims that after the city was struck by an earthquake that rocked houses and other structures, locals were seen evacuating their homes.
According to the news report, the earthquake had a value of 6.02 on the Richter scale and was located 10 kilometres (6.21) below the surface of the earth, according to the German Research Centre of Geosciences (GFZ).
It was also reported that Wednesday’s earthquake was among the most powerful the city has had in recent memory. Istanbul is home to around 16 million people.
The agency study states that when the earthquake struck the beaches of the Bosphorus Strait in Asia and Europe, no immediate reports of damage were made.
According to the report, the earthquake struck the city at 12:49 (0949 GMT) in the Silivri neighbourhood, which is 80 km west of Istanbul. No significant harm to the public’s health or damage was found during the initial examinations.
“An earthquake of 6.2 magnitude occurred in Silivri, Sea of Marmara, Istanbul,” Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said, quoting the news agency AFP.
The interior minister added that following Wednesday’s huge earthquake, there were over 50 aftershocks, some of which were extremely strong.
“By 3:12 pm (1212 GMT), 51 aftershocks– the largest of which was 5.9 magnitude — had been recorded,” he said, as per the agency report.
As soon as the ground began to tremble beneath them, people began to run from their homes.
No one died on Wednesday, according to Istanbul Governor Davut Gul, although several people were being treated at the nearby hospitals.
‘151 people injured when they jumped or tried to jump from a height in panic,” he said, reassuring that the injuries were not life-threatening, according to the agency’s report.
“There is no destruction to residential buildings in the city, but an abandoned building collapsed in the Fatih District without causing any deaths or injuries,” said Gul in a post, cited in the report.
