US President-elect Donald Trump announced that he is nominating Pam Bondi as the next attorney general, following the withdrawal of controversial candidate Matt Gaetz.
Bondi is the former Florida attorney general and longtime Trump ally. She is now set to lead the Department of Justice with a budget of $45 billion and over 115,000 employees.
Bondi practiced law in Florida for over a decade serving as a state attorney general from 2011 to 2019. She built a reputation as a tough lawyer during her tenure, leading lawsuits against opioid manufacturers and participating in high-profile cases, including efforts to revoke Obamacare.
Then, Bondi also played a key role in defending Trump during his first impeachment trial and has continued to champion his policies.
The nomination comes after Gaetz, a Florida congressman withdrew from consideration due to allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use.
Despite Gaetz’s staunch denials, The controversy around his nomination drew two parties opposition leading to his decision to step aside. Trump praised Gaetz’s efforts but acknowledged the political hurdles.
After that Trump wrote on Truth Social, “Pam will refocus the DOJ on its core mission: fighting crime and making America safe again”, highlighting her years of experience as a prosecutor and her loyalty to his administration.
Bondi’s nomination signals Trump’s intent to prioritize loyalty and align the DOJ with his “America First’ agenda.
Bondi’s path to confirmation appears smoother than Gaetz’s, with republican Senator Lindsey Graham calling her nomination a “Grand Slam.”
Known for her media savvy and staunch conservative review, Bondi has pledged to restore public trust in the Department of Justice and address issues like border security and organized crime.
This appointment marks another instance of Trump selecting loyal allies for top roles in his administration. Bondi’s steadfast defence of Trump over the years including during his legal battles likely played a significant role in her selection.
