The UK’s largest cruise line, P&O Cruises, will welcome its biggest ship, MS Iona, into Southampton this weekend. The arrival is set to draw crowds to the port city and mark a highlight for British cruising this summer.
MS Iona is one of the most advanced cruise ships in the world. She was built by Meyer Werft in Germany and delivered to P&O Cruises at a cost of 730 million euros.
This ship stretches over 344 meters in length and has an impressive 184,049 gross tonnage. This makes Iona not just the biggest ship in the P&O Cruises fleet but also the largest ever commissioned for the UK market.
The ship can carry more than 5,200 guests and 1,700 crew members. Onboard, guests enjoy 17 different eateries, which include several speciality restaurants, and 12 bars.
Four swimming pools and 16 whirlpools add to the luxury. The SKYDome, a unique glass-covered entertainment venue, sits at the top of the ship and hosts spectacular shows every night.
MS Iona was launched in 2020 but began sailing with guests in summer 2021 after a delay caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, she has become one of the most popular cruise ships in Europe.
P&O Cruises has won several awards, including “Best UK Cruise Line” and “Best Ocean Cruise Line” for families and no-fly holidays.
On Saturday, Southampton will be buzzing as the vessel arrives. Many local businesses are preparing for the boost in visitors. Port Stuff says this weekend will be one of the busiest of the year. Passengers are set to board for journeys to popular destinations, including Norway’s fjords, the Canary Islands and the Caribbean.
Paul Ludlow, president of P&O Cruises, shared his excitement about Iona’s visit. “Welcoming our biggest ship to Southampton is a proud moment for all of us. We want guests to experience the very best of British cruising. Lona represents innovation, comfort and fun at sea,” he said.
Lona is also an eco-friendly ship. She is powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), which helps reduce emissions and makes her one of the greenest cruise ships in the world. The company says this technology supports their goal to deliver memorable holidays while caring for the environment.
For guests, the trip promises unforgettable experiences. From high-class dining and spa treatments to onboard entertainment, MS Lons has something for everyone. Travel experts recommend booking early, as demand for cabins is high throughout the year.
Southampton’s port authorities are ready for the occasion. Local inns, cafes, and attractions expect an increase in visitors. Many people hope to catch a glimpse of the majestic ship as she docks.
MS Lons’s visit shows the strength of the UK cruise market and the popularity of sea holidays. As the biggest ship ever built for P&O Cruises sails into Southampton, excitement runs high for travellers and locals alike.
