Sir Keir Starmer backed Rachel Reeves to remain chancellor in the following election and for many years after. Rachel Reeves was seen crying during Sir Starmer’s questions.
The Prime Minister refused to declare whether Reeves would remain in her duties until the next election in front of MPs in the Commons. During a season, Reeves was seen wiping away her tears as she sat behind the PM.
Later, the UK Prime Minister said that he worked in lockstep with Reeves, also adding that Reeves did an excellent job as a chancellor. Following PMQs, a spokesperson for Reeves said that she had been dealing with a personal matter and Sir Keir had seen her tears had nothing to do with politics.
When asked whether Reeves would remain in government, in reply, Sir Keir said that Reeves had done an excellent job as a chancellor and they had delivered inward investment to the country in record numbers.
He added that Reeves and he had worked together, and they think together.
The Prime Minister failed to guarantee whether Rachel Reeves would come back as the Chancellor when pressed by Kemi Badenoch on Wednesday. Ms Badenoch told the Commons that Ms Reeves looked like “absolutely miserable”, listening to that, Reeves wiped away her eyes.
The Labour Minister, Ellie Reeves, then came out to hold her sister’s hands as she left the chamber on Wednesday.
At a highly charged PMQs, the Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch, blamed the government for its Welfare U-turns.
She said that Reeves would now be forced to put up taxes and asked if she would still be Chancellor in the following election.
She told the PM that the Labour MPs are going on the record saying that Reeves is toast. She also added that the truth is that the Chancellor is also a human shield for his incompetence.
Sir Keir stated that no Prime Minister or Chancellor ever stands at the dispatch box and writes down a budget for the future.
Prime Minister ignored Badenoch’s questions and insisted the welfare reform bill would get more people back into work.
Many colleagues and allies of Reeves are blaming an altercation with the Commons Speaker, Sir Hoyle, for distressing her in the parliament.
Several accused him of having been immediate with Reeves in a meeting before PMQs. The Speakers’ Office has refused to comment.
Meanwhile, Sir Keir came under attack in the fiery PMQs over his failure to provide 5bn pounds of welfare cuts. This spending was a crucial part of the expenditure review.
