Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League graduate, has been charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Mangione was apprehended on December 9 at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a patron recognized him from media reports and promoted an employee’s emergency call, NYPD Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry confirmed the arrest.
He faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder, three gun-related offences, and forgery.
Upon his arrest, police discovered a so-called “ghost gun,” a firearm assembled from parts without serial numbers along with a handwritten manifesto.
Mangione criticized the healthcare system for prioritizing profits over patient care, stating that United Healthcare thrived while American life expectancy stagnated.
He reportedly took responsibility for the murder in these writings, suggesting deep-seated frustrations with the industry.
The tragic incident unfolded on December 4 when Thompson was shot outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel as he arrived for an investor conference.
Witnesses reported that a masked assailant approached Thomson from behind and shot him multiple times before fleeing the scene on an electric bike. He was pronounced dead shortly after at Mount Sinai West Hospital.
Although the murder has been described by law enforcement as a “premeditated, preplanned, targeted attack,” prompting an extensive manhunt that culminated in Mangione’s arrest five days later.
Mangione’s background adds complexity to this case. Raised in a prominent Baltimore family and educated at the University of Pennsylvania, he has previously worked as a data engineer at TrueCar.
