Homeowners are increasingly looking for effective ways to reduce their energy bills, especially as winter approaches. One simple yet powerful method involves adjusting thermostat settings, which can significantly save heating costs.
Research indicates that homeowners can save up to 10% annually on heating and cooling by lowering their thermostat by 7-10°F for at least eight hours daily.
This strategy is particularly effective at night or when the house is unoccupied. For instance, setting the thermostat to 69°F during waking hours and reducing it further at night or when away can lead to substantial savings.
The Department of Energy emphasizes that this approach is beneficial in milder climates, where the percentage of savings tends to be higher.
The National Debtline poll found 45% of people are heading into winter with worries about their finances. 22% of people convey they are losing sleep over the money concern and affecting their health.
Even 12% of people said they are planning to cut back on baths and showers to help them afford rising energy costs.
Stephen Day, director of heat, says, “Lowering your thermostat by just 1°C can reduce your energy bills by up to 10%.”
Using a timer ensures you are only heating your home when it’s needed, which is particularly effective if you are out during the day.
“Combining these strategies, such as setting the thermostat to 18-20°C and programming it to come on 30 minutes before you wake, can help you stay warm efficiently.”
Middleton advises, “Each of your home appliances should be checked to ensure they’re operating with the most efficiency and therefore saving you as much money on your energy bills as possible.”
They may include everything from the limescale in kettles to the position of your refrigerator. During winter gatherings, it’s also wise to lower the thermostat slightly before guests arrive.
Since people generate heat, this simple adjustment can help maintain comfort while saving on energy costs.
Stuart Middleton, the consumer energy expert, recommends, “Things like limescale inside of kettles can impact how efficiently your appliances are working and can be responsible for small but consistent upticks in your energy costs, so be sure to clean out your kettle regularly and do your laundry in larger, less frequent loads.”
Also, to maximize the savings, homeowners should consider other energy-efficient practices. These include closing curtains during the day in winter to retain heat and using fans strategically in summer to circulate air without relying heavily on air conditioning.
Regular maintenance of heating systems and sealing any drafts around doors and windows can further enhance efficiency.
Simple adjustments in thermostat settings with smart technology and regular maintenance can lead to significant financial savings.
