Salmonella infection has led to the recall of six egg brands. Consumers are advised to return faulty eggs to the retailer or discard them.
Following a multistate salmonella infection epidemic, eggs were recalled. Six distinct egg brands in Canada have been recalled because of the potential for salmonella infection.
Golden Valley, Compliments, Foremost, IGA, No Name, and Western Family eggs were recalled by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) on Saturday, January 18. The recall includes eggs of various sizes and packaging. Only certain egg lot numbers have been impacted. The CFIA website provides a list of lot numbers.
People should not use, sell, distribute, serve, or consume recalled products, the FDA advised. If recalled eggs are found in lots that may be salmonella-contaminated, they should be thrown out or brought back to the retailer.
According to the CFIA website, “Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick.”
Food poisoning can be caused by the bacteria salmonella, which is present in both human and animal intestines.
Although salmonella can contaminate fruit and vegetables through fertiliser used on crops, the items that provide the greatest risk are typically animal products, including raw meat, unpasteurised milk, undercooked chicken, and eggs.
Golden Valley, Compliments, Foremost, IGA, No Name, and Western Family Eggs are the six impacted brands.
Salmonella symptoms include diarrhoea, cramping in the stomach, fever, nausea, vomiting, chills, headache, and blood in the stool, according to the Mayo Clinic.
The majority of individuals get better on their own in a few days, but if the disease persists for more than a few days, is accompanied by a high fever, or the patient starts to exhibit symptoms of dehydration, they are advised to consult a physician.
The Food and Drug Administration raised the alert level for Costco’s egg recall in the United States last month due to salmonella concerns.
This recall was classified as “Class I” by the FDA in December 2024, which means that there is a “reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
One month after 10,800 retail units of organic eggs were recalled from Costco stores in the southern United States, the FDA changed its categorisation to reflect the highest risk level that a recall can have. Because of “the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella,” Handsome Brook Farms in New York recalled the 24-count boxes with the Kirkland Signature trademark.
The cartons included in Handsome Brook Farms’s recall were sold at 25 Costco stores located in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee beginning on November 22, 2024. Units with Julian code 327 and a “use by” date of January 5, 2025, are included under the recall.
The FDA said in the press statement that the recall was launched after officials at Handsome Brook determined that eggs not meant for delivery to markets had accidentally been packaged and distributed to retailers.
No known illnesses have been connected to the affected products. Similar to the current recall in Canada, consumers who have one of the affected cartons should return the eggs to their local Costco store to receive a full refund or dispose of the eggs.
