Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, the billionaire philanthropist and spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslims has passed away at the age of 88. His death was confirmed by the Aga Khan Development Network, stating he “departed peacefully” in Lisbon, Portugal, surrounded by family on February 4, 2025.

Born Mawlana Shah Karim Al Hussaini, he became the 49th hereditary imam of the Ismaili community at just 20 years old while studying at Harvard University.

The unique transition from student to spiritual leader marked the beginning of a remarkable journey dedicated to philanthropy and community service.

The Aga Khan was a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad and was revered by his followers for his leadership and vision. He transformed his family’s material wealth into a vast philanthropic empire, focusing on building hospitals, schools, and cultural institutions primarily in developing regions.

His commitment to improving the quality of life across diverse communities was a hallmark of his leadership.

The Aga Khan Development Network said, “Condolences to the family of His Highness and the Ismaili community worldwide.”

“We continue to work with our partner to improve the quality of life for individuals and communities across the world, as he wished, irrespective of their religious affiliations or origins,” it added.

His passing has deeply affected many, including King Charles III, who expressed profound sadness over the loss of a close friend.

The King is reportedly in private communication with the Aga Khan’s family during this difficult time.

The Aga Khan Development Network, which employs approximately 96,000 people globally, has pledged to honour its legacy by continuing efforts to enhance living conditions for individuals regardless of their backgrounds.

The Ismaili community population, which is about 15 million worldwide, including 500,00 in Pakistan and a large number in India, Afghanistan, and Africa, is mourning the loss of their spiritual leader.

Prince Karim Aga Khan succeeded his grandfather as imam of the Ismaili Muslims in 1957 at the age of 20. He had an estimated fortune of $1bn in 2008, according the Forbes magazine.

The Aga Khan’s contributions to society were significant; he was instrumental in establishing healthcare initiatives in countries like Bangladesh and Afghanistan. His organization also focused on education and rural development, reflecting his belief in empowering communities through knowledge and resources.

In addition to his philanthropic endeavours, the Aga Khan was known for his interests in horse breeding and ownership. He gained prominence as a leading figure in the racing world, notably breeding Sherger, one of the most famous racehorses in history.

The announcement regarding his successor will be made soon, following traditional practices within the Ismaili community. As they navigate this transition, followers are encouraged to reflect on Aga Khan’s life and contributions.

His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations as they strive to fulfill his vision of a more compassionate and equitable world.
