Nissan has announced a major recall affecting more than 480,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada. The recall is due to a manufacturing defect in the engines that could cause engine failure while driving. This issue raises safety concerns for drivers and passengers.

The affected vehicles include several popular Nissan and Infiniti models. These are the 2019-2020 Nissan Altima, 2021-2024 Nissan Rogue, 2019-2022 Infiniti QX50, and 2022 Infiniti QX55. All these models are equipped with Nissan’s variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines, either a 3-cylinder 1.5L or a 4-cylinder 2.0L engine.

The problem lies in the engine bearings. Nissan found that some bearings may have manufacturing defects. These defects can cause the bearings to fail, leading to engine damage or complete failure. Engine failure while driving increases the risk of a crash.

NHTSA, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reported that bearing failures usually happen gradually. Drivers may notice warning signs before a failure occurs. These signs include unusual noises from the engine, rough engine running, warning lights on the dashboard, and messages in the instrument cluster.

To fix the problem, Nissan dealers will inspect the engine oil pan for metal debris. If debris is found, the engine will be repaired or replaced free of charge. If no debris is found, the repair depends on the engine type. For the 3-cylinder 1.5L engine, dealers will replace the oil pan gasket, change the oil, and reprogram the engine control module. For the 4-cylinder 2.0L engine, they will replace the engine oil only.

Nissan will notify affected vehicle owners by mail starting August 25, 2025. The letters will instruct owners to take their cars to a Nissan or Infiniti dealer for inspection and repair if needed. Nissan has set up customer service hotlines for owners who want more information. The recall number is 25V437.

Nissan stated that the recall is part of its ongoing commitment to customer safety. The company is working quickly to address the issue and prevent any accidents caused by engine failure. This recall is a significant setback for Nissan, especially since the VC-Turbo engine was a key innovation for the brand.

Owners of the affected vehicles are advised to watch for any warning signs and contact their dealer promptly. The repairs will be done at no cost to the customers. Nissan and Infiniti dealerships are ready to handle the inspections and repairs to ensure the safety of drivers on the road.
