Marks & Spencer (M&S) has launched a new dessert sandwich that is already creating a buzz. The limited edition product is called the Red Diamond Strawberry & Creme Sandwich. This new sandwich is priced at 2.80 euros and is available now in M&S Foodhalls across the UK.
The idea for this dessert sandwich comes from Japan. It is inspired by “sweet sandos,” which are fruit sandwiches popular in Japanese patisseries. These fruit sandwiches originally appeared in luxury fruit shops in Japan but have since become widely loved and sold throughout the country.
M&S product developers noticed the trend, especially as it has started appearing in London’s Japanese patisseries. They decided to create their British version using their exclusive Red Diamond Strawberries, known for being super juicy and sweet.
M&S said the sandwich is the ultimate strawberries and cream experience. It is perfect for summer occasions such as alfresco lunches, afternoon tea at home, summer picnics, or even a courtside snack during Wimbledon. The timing of the launch coincides with the start of Wimbledon, making it a fitting summer treat.
The Red Diamond strawberries used in the sandwich are a special variety grown exclusively for M&S by select farmers in Britain. Due to perfect weather conditions, these strawberries have been particularly good this year.
M&S sells around 4.1 million punnets of these strawberries annually, highlighting their popularity. The sandwich showcases these strawberries at their juiciest best, combined with lightly whipped cream cheese and sweetened bread, creating a dessert that is both refreshing and indulgent.
M&S has a long history with sandwiches. The company first sold freshly made sandwiches in the 1920s and revolutionised the market in the 1980s by introducing pre-packed sandwiches on the high street. To date, M&S Foodhalls have sold four billion sandwiches. The retailer describes this new dessert sandwich as “game-changing,” adding a sweet twist to their extensive sandwich range.
In addition to the dessert sandwich, M&S has also launched a complementary product: the Collection Red Diamond Strawberry Lemonade. This drink is priced at 3.50 euros for a one-litre bottle and is designed to pair well with the strawberry and cream sandwich, offering a complete summer refreshment experience.
