Oscar-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s most recent movie will transport viewers to mythological Greece.
This week, Universal Pictures said that Nolan will be directing the film adaptation of “The Odyssey,” an old poem that is thought to have been composed by Homer between 750 and 650 BCE and revolves around the character Odysseus’ ten-year journey home following the Trojan War.
There is no more speculation about Christopher Nolan’s next movie. On Monday, Universal announced that Nolan would adapt Homer’s epic poem: The Odyssey, which chronicles Odysseus’ return home following the Trojan War.
The Cast
On July 17, 2026, the film will open in theatres worldwide, bringing Homer’s timeless saga to IMAX screens for the first time.
According to reports, the movie will feature Oscar winners Matt Damon, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, Tom Holland, and Robert Pattinson.
Holland recently discussed joining the project, stating last week on “The Dish” podcast that filming has not yet begun.
When they met to discuss the proposal, he noted that Nolan merely “loosely pitched” it to him and was still unaware of all the specifics.
Speaking about working alongside his girlfriend Zendaya, the “Spider-Man” actor joked that “studios love it” when they are working on the same movie since they have to pay for “one hotel room.”
Pattinson, Damon, and Hathaway have all starred in Nolan’s earlier works, such as “Oppenheimer,” “Interstellar,” and “Tenet.” Epic movies like “Inception,” “The Dark Knight,” “Dunkirk,” and his most recent work, “Oppenheimer,” which won the Best Picture prize at the previous year’s Oscars, are also directed by Nolan.
Anne recently acknowledged that working with Nolan on his upcoming film “fills [her] with so much joy” after previously appearing in his films “The Dark Knight Rises” (2012) and “Interstellar” (2014).
“I have so many feelings about it that I don’t even know how to articulate,” she told Women’s Wear Daily.
She recently acknowledged that working with him on his upcoming film “fills [her] with so much joy.” “It fills me with so much joy … I love Chris and Emma Nolan so much, and to be invited into their world [is] one of the best places you can find yourself”.
The Odyssey
Nolan has already experimented with historical pieces, such as the best-picture winner Oppenheimer, which chronicled the development of the atomic bomb, and The Prestige, which was based on Christopher Priest’s book and focused on two rival magicians in London in the 1890s.
However, The Odyssey represents a significant shift in the director’s style. The epic poem of Homer, which was written in the eighth century BC, describes gods, goddesses, and monsters.
This kind of content is not seen in Nolan’s previous works. Nevertheless, the film has tackled a lot of outlandish content, such as making Batman credible for those not around after 9/11 and giving sci-fi concepts like Interstellar and Inception.
Among the many adaptations of the epic poem is the 1954 film Ulysses, starring Kirk Douglas. Other films have also been influenced by it, such as the 2000 release of O Brother, and Where Art Thou? by the Coen brothers.
Troy, the 2004 film starring Brad Pitt as Achilles and Sean Bean as Odysseus, brought the Trojan War saga to the big screen.
Wolfgang Petersen, the director of Troy, claims that Nolan was considered for the film before he made Batman Begins.
Oppenheimer gave Nolan the Best Picture and Best Director awards, and he started the year with his first Oscars in his decades-long career. In a final ceremony, Nolan received another honour: he was formally knighted by King Charles.
The movie’s production company, Universal Pictures, announced the title revelation on its official X website.
“The Odyssey,” Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, is a mythic action epic that was shot all over the world with the use of brand-new IMAX film technology.
“The film opens in theatres worldwide on July 17, 2026, bringing Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time,” the studio stated in the article.
