The Guardian says that American singer Chris Brown was taken into custody Thursday at a hotel in Salford about a reported nightclub assault. The assault allegedly occurred two years ago, and Brown was arrested in London.
Brown was taken into custody by police at the five-star Lowry hotel in Greater Manchester at around two in the morning.
Just before a scheduled performance tour, he had landed in the U.K. Brown is being detained at this time on suspicion of causing serious injury. The arrest falls under the purview of the Metropolitan Police’s investigation.
The purported incident happened at London’s Mayfair Tape nightclub in February 2023. Music producer Abe Diaw was allegedly subjected to an unprovoked attack by Brown, who repeatedly hit him with a bottle before hitting and kicking him while he was on the ground.
Diaw previously told The Sun that he filed a civil lawsuit seeking $16 million in damages after the claimed assault left him unable to walk without crutches.
In a statement, a Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “A 36-year-old man was arrested at a hotel in Manchester shortly after 0200hrs on Thursday, 15 May on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.”
“He has been taken into custody, where he remains. The arrest relates to an incident at a venue in Hanover Square on 19 February 2023.”
Brown’s Breezy Bowl XX tour, which starts on June 15 at the Co-op Live venue in Manchester, will include 10 performances in the UK. The impact of his arrest on those tour dates is still unknown.
In 2008, Chris Brown was also sent into custody for beating Rihanna, his then-girlfriend.
Chris Brown Court Cases
A lengthy string of legal issues that have plagued Chris Brown’s career for more than ten years have resulted from his ascent to popularity as an R&B sensation.
According to US Magazine, Brown was involved in a fight with singer Frank Ocean in 2013, a confrontation with Drake in a nightclub in 2012, and numerous other events ranging from alleged assaults to probation breaches and weapons accusations.
Among the most severe allegations are lawsuits from former workers, restraining orders issued by ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran, and allegations of sexual assault.
Brown was taken into custody in 2016 after a woman claimed he had threatened her with a gun. After a protracted confrontation with the police, no charges were brought.
The matter was resolved out of court after Brown refuted claims that a woman had been sexually assaulted at his house in 2018.
He was included in a police report regarding an alleged assault at his residence in 2021, and he was listed in a lawsuit following an alleged attack by his dog on the sister of a servant.
