A woman was arrested on suspicion of child neglect following the tragic death of Madison Smith, the four-month-old grandson of former Manchester United defender and current Blackpool FC manager Steve Bruce.
The baby was the son of Bruce’s daughter, Amy, and her husband, Matt Smith, a former professional footballer who played for clubs including Leeds United and Fulham.
The arrest comes after police discovered Madison unresponsive at his home in Trafford, Greater Manchester, on October 18, 2024.
Emergency services were called to the residence shortly after 7 AM in response to a welfare concern. The paramedics found the infant and transported him to the hospital; he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The 40-year-old woman arrested is the night nanny of Madison’s care. She has since been released on bail while the investigation continues.

Madison was the perfect little boy and the most perfect nephew; life will never be the same without him.”
