A woman was arrested on suspicion of child neglect following the tragic death of Madison Smith, the four-month-old grandson of former Manchester United defender and current Blackpool FC manager Steve Bruce.

The baby was the son of Bruce’s daughter, Amy, and her husband, Matt Smith, a former professional footballer who played for clubs including Leeds United and Fulham.

The arrest comes after police discovered Madison unresponsive at his home in Trafford, Greater Manchester, on October 18, 2024.

Emergency services were called to the residence shortly after 7 AM in response to a welfare concern. The paramedics found the infant and transported him to the hospital; he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

The 40-year-old woman arrested is the night nanny of Madison’s care. She has since been released on bail while the investigation continues.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) are examining her phone as part of their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death. Reports suggest that she may have been active on social media before Madison was found unresponsive, raising concerns among investigators.

The news of Medison’s death shocked the football community. Blackpool F announced that Steve Bruce would miss their match against Barnsley on October 19 due to this family tragedy.

In a heartfelt statement released after his grandson’s funeral on October 29, Bruce expressed profound grief: “It’s been the worst time of my family’s entire lives and is something no family should have to endure.”

Bruce’s son Alex also shared his sorrow, stating, “There are no words to describe how painful the last two weeks have been for us all. especially Matt and Amy.

Madison was the perfect little boy and the most perfect nephew; life will never be the same without him.”

As investigations by GMP continue into this heartbreaking case, authorities are focused on determining the exact circumstances that led to Madison’s untimely death.

The community remains supportive of Bruce and his family during this difficult time, with many from within the football world sending messages of sympathy and solidarity.

This tragic incident highlights ongoing concerns about child safety and welfare, prompting discussions about care practices among families with young children.

The investigation is expected to unfold further in the coming weeks as police gather more evidence and testimonies related to this sensitive case.
