The United Kingdom is set to celebrate the ‘Greatest Generation’ with an additional bank holiday to celebrate 80 years of WW2. It aims to provide citizens with a much anticipated four-day weekend to make a significant moment in history.
This announcement boosts enthusiasm as it offers an opportunity for families and friends to come together and reflect on the sacrifices made during the war.
An estimated 70,000 WW2 veterans are still alive, and next year will be an opportunity for them to experience tributes in their honour. Veterans have expressed enthusiastic support for the idea of lengthy bank holidays.
Geo Roberts, 99, a Market Garden veteran taken prisoner during the Arnthm assault in 1944, shared his thoughts: “I think it’s very important in these current times we remember those that gave their lives for our freedom and peace in Europe.
We should never forget them. Maybe an extra holiday will help to remind people about what’s happened in the past.”
Marie Scott, 98, was just 17 during the D-day landings and served in a vital top-secret role within an underground bunker.
“An additional bank holiday would be an opportunity to thank all those wonderful people who made such a spectacular victory possible because, with them, the future could have been very dire indeed.”
The bank holiday is scheduled for Monday, May 5, 2025, creating a long weekend from Saturday, May 3, to Tuesday, May 6. This extended break allows for a perfect opportunity to plan trips or participate in local commemorative events.
Moreover, this new bank holiday serves as a reminder of the importance of community and remembrance. Local councils and organizations are encouraged to host events that celebrate peace and unity, fostering a sense of togetherness among residents.
Activities may include parades, educational programs about WWII history, and memorial services honouring veterans.
In 2025, the UK will observe eight public bank holidays. The Bank Holiday will start with New Year’s Day on January 1. It is followed by Good Friday on April 18 and Easter Monday on April 21.
The early May Bank Holidays are scheduled for May 5, and the Spring Bank Holiday will take place on Mat 26. The Summer Bank Holiday is set for August 25, while the festive season will conclude with Christmas Day on December 25 and Boxing Day on December 26.
There have been discussions about adding a ninth holiday to honour Queen Elizabeth II’s region, but government officials have expressed concerns over the economic impact of additional holidays.
