A British man, identified as James Scott Rhys Anderson, has reportedly been captured by Russian forces while fighting for Ukraine.
In a Russian television channel on Sunday, James expressed his combat fatigues and spoke in an English accent that he served as a signalman in the British army until 2023 before joining the International Legion in Ukraine to fight against Russia.
In the video, the captured man is uncleared and appears with his hand tied. He indicated that he joined Ukraine’s International Legion after losing his job, expressing regret about his decision.
“It was a stupid idea,” he said, reflecting on his choice to fight abroad after losing everything.
The Russian state news agency Tass confirmed the capture, citing a military source that referred to Anderson as a “UK mercenary.”
The British Foreign Office has acknowledged this situation and is reportedly providing support to Anderson’s family following reports of his detention.
However, they have not disclosed further details about the circumstances surrounding his capture or any potential diplomatic efforts for his release.
Anderson’s journey to Ukraine involved travelling from London to Krakow, Poland, and then taking a bus to the Ukraine border. He described how he felt compelled to act after seeing news of conflict on television.
“I see it on the TV…it was a stupid idea,” he reiterated in the video. His story highlights the increasing involvement of foreign nationals in the conflict since Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for international volunteers to join the fight against Russia.
Since August, Russian forces have been counterattacking in the Kursk region, leading Ukraine to lose over 40% of the territory it initially captured during a surprise offensive.
Ukrainian military sources report that they controlled around 1376 sq km but now hold only about sq km. The Russian military has bolstered its presence with approximately 59,000 troops and support from around 11,000 North Korean soldiers.
This incident conveys ongoing tensions in the region. Ukraine launched a surprise offensive into Kursk in August to reclaim significant territory.
Russian forces have intensified their counter-offensives. The situation remains precarious as both sides engage in fierce battles for control over contested areas.
