A security incident unfolded outside the US Embassy in London on November 22, 2024. A suspicious package was discovered near the embassy, located in the Nine Elms area, leading to a controlled explosion carried out by the Metropolitan Police.
The metropolitan police said, “It was a hoax device. An investigation will now follow. Some cordons will remain in place for the time being, but the majority of police responses will now be stood down.”
The embassy itself was placed on lockdown for about an hour and a half while assessing the situation. Witnesses reported hearing a “loud bang” shortly after the controlled explosion was executed.
The metropolitan police stated on social media, “We can confirm that the ‘loud bang’ reported in the area a short time ago was a controlled explosion carried out by officers.”
The embassy said, “It had returned to normal business operations, although all public appointments were cancelled for the day. Local authorities investigated and cleared a suspicious package outside the Embassy.
Thanks to @metpoliceuk for your swift action, and thanks to all visitors for your cooperation and patience at this time.”
One visitor noted, “We didn’t hear anything; it was very calm and chilled in there.” It highlights how well the embassy managed the situation.
However, this incident coincided with another security alert at Gatwick Airport, where a section of the South Terminal was evacuated due to a separate security threat involving passenger baggage.
The simultaneous incidents heightened security concerns across London. It prompted an increase in vigilance from law enforcement agencies.
As of now, both locations have returned to normal operations following investigations. Authorities continue to encourage public awareness and caution regarding suspicious activities.
