Reddit, the uber-population social news and discussion site, experienced a significant outage yesterday, which lasted for almost four hours.
As this app is favoured by millions of people about a variety of subjects, it has a significant impact on millions of Redditors who are seeking information or trying to post.
Recent reports indicate an intermittent outage, particularly concerning login issues, but the platform is currently operational
Users from multiple locations, including the United States and Canada, reported significant problems logging into Reddit, causing frustration among users trying to access their accounts.
Despite all these reports, the Reddit status page confirmed that there were no ongoing problems at this time and that the previous issues had been resolved.
At 12 PM PT (3:15 pm ET), Downdetector suddenly saw a surge of outage reports that peaked at over 47,00 reports in the first hour and widespread affecting posters across the globe.
The outrage ranged from intermittent periods where users could access the site, but it was sluggish and refused to load comments. Other times the site was completely down with Reddit’s custom error page appearing.
Reddit spokesperson told Tom’s Guide “There was a bug in a recent update we made, but a fix is in place, and we’re ramping back up.”
This statement was passed around 1:45 pm P.T., but there is no timeline confirming when the site might return to stability.
Despite his statement, Tom’s guide colleagues reported seeing a red error bar on the site, while others reported slow load times. At 4:20 P.M. Pacific, it started appearing as a major Reddit outage and has mostly been resolved.
In the last few months, Reddit has faced several brief outages, but less severe than this one. The previous outage is recorded as a downtime of about 59 minutes.
As of now, Reddit’s systems are reported as fully operational. The platform has boasted 100% uptime over the last 30 days. It indicates the recent issues were likely isolated incidents rather than signs of systemic failure.
Users can also subscribe to updates via email or Slack to receive notifications about any future incidents or maintenance activities directly from Reddit’s status page.
Many users expressed their frustrations on various subreddits, while others conveyed that such technical hiccups are not uncommon for large platforms like Reddit.
However, discussions on subreddits such as r/help and r/redditnow have provided users with a space to share their experiences and seek assistance during these outages.
