A Michaelhouse pupil and his parents died in a car accident this Saturday afternoon. The accident took place between Mooi River and Greytown. The Grade 8 pupil’s brother is in critical condition following the accident.
A total of 21 people died in this car accident including the grade 8 Michaelhouse pupil and his parents. Midlands EMs spokesperson Roland Robertson stated that their crews were dispatched to the RG22 Greytown Road after following a head-on collision.
Robertson also said that upon arrival, the crews met with a horrific scenario. Eleven people had no signs of life and they were declared dead at the spot of the event. He also stated that a 12-year-old male was the sole survivor of one of the vehicles. He was found in critical condition. The child has been placed on a manual ventilator at the scene and has been taken to a specialist hospital for further care.
Another person was also found in critical condition sustained serious injuries and required urgent treatment. On Saturday evening, Michaelhouse Restor, Antony Clark, stated that they were devasted to have to inform their Michaelhouse community that one of their E Block boys (Grade 8), Garth Finnemore had died in a car accident on that afternoon along with his parents.
The boy was travelling home from a Sevens rugby event at Wembley College. He was in his parents’ car along with his parents and his younger brother. His younger brother has been transported to a hospital in critical condition.
The rector also added that at that point they did not know any further details but they would keep their community updated in due course. Their staff and their pastoral team of the Michaelhouse community presently engaging with our boys at that difficult time. He also added that “our thoughts and prayers are with the Finnemore family”.
Various schools from KwaZulu-Natal and the rest of South Africa conveyed their condolence on Facebook after Michaelhouse broke the news.
Durban Preparatory High School (DPHS) said that the DPHS community is devasted at the news of the loss of some valued members of their Prep family. The school authority also stated, “We hold Harry (Grade 6) and their entire Finnemore family in our thoughts at this difficult time”.
In addition to this accident, two other major incidents took place on the N3 on Saturday. One of which involved pupils travelling in a school taxi.
