Tesco has launched a new limited edition “Birthday Cake Sandwich” as part of its meal deal offer. The sandwich is inspired by classic birthday cake flavours and features sweet fillings similar to those of a Victoria sponge cake, complete with colourful sprinkles. It is available now for a short time in about 1,000 Tesco stores across the UK.
The sandwich is priced at 3 euros when bought on its own. It can also be included in Tesco’s meal deal for €4 or €3.60 with a Clubcard discount. This special birthday cake sandwich will be sold for only four weeks, making it a brief but unique addition to Tesco’s range.
The launch has attracted a lot of attention online. Some shoppers and Tesco employees have praised the sandwich. One Tesco worker said, “I work for Tesco and have it for lunch—it’s b***** amazing.” Another customer commented simply, “It’s so good.” However, not everyone liked the idea.
Some people said mixing cake and sandwiches did not appeal to them. Comments included, “Absolutely no…Sandwich is a sandwich, and cake is cake. No need to mix,” and Looks disgusting.” This division of opinion has made the sandwich a viral topic across social media platforms.
Tesco is not the first supermarket to try a sweet sandwich that mixes dessert flavours with the typical sandwich format. Earlier this year, rival Marks & Spencer stirred conversation with its “Strawberries & Cream” sandwich.
This M&S product was inspired by Japanese sandwich styles and contained sweet bread filled with strawberries and whipped cream cheese. It was launched during Wimbledon and was priced at 2.80 euros. Marks & Spencer is known for sandwich innovations dating back to the 1920s for freshly made sandwiches and the 1980s for pre-packed ones.
Tesco has also experimented in the past with unusual sandwich ideas. They have released limited edition offerings like the “Ham, Egg and Chips” sandwich, which some shoppers described as “The next best thing to being down the cafe.”
Tesco’s meal deal range has included items such as Krispy Kreme doughnuts, Pot Noodles, and even tomato soup alongside traditional sandwich choices.
The birthday cake sandwich is a notable example of Tesco trying to attract attention with bold and different flavours. While it has split opinions, it shows Tesco’s willingness to take risks and innovate in the competitive sandwich market.
The new product will only be on sale for four weeks, so customers interested in trying a sweet sandwich with the fun taste of a birthday cake will need to act soon.
