Carlos Alcaraz is one of the favourites to win the US 2024 Open, however, according to former ATP player, John McEnroe it is a big ask after some emotional weeks. Alcaraz is the most expected player who can challenge for the trophy at every event he plays.
The Spaniard does not participate in any event thinking that he can’t win. So, it is very natural for a player like him to be the favourite among the others everywhere he goes.
Moreover, Alcaraz is not a mutant, he is a human. So, he won’t win every match he plays and will lose some matches though people expect him to win. At the very recent, Paris Olympics, Alcaraz lost a match that very few people thought he could lose.
He didn’t even think that he could lose because he expressed his thoughts about winning the gild metal even before the final match. He didn’t win the match, it emotionally let down the 21-year-old Spaniard. Alcaraz was spotted crying after losing the match.
The happening of the Paris Olympics was evident in Cincinnati, where the Spaniard played a match describing that it was the worst match of his career. The Paris Olympics shadow was still over the tennis player.
In his opening round of the 2024 US Open, things looked much better. However, Alcaraz did not put the best of him in the match. Perhaps he may show up with a couple more wins, but McEnroe was not sure that Alcaraz would win the US Open.
McEnroe spoke to tennis365 in New York and expressed his thoughts regarding the tennis player. According to McEnroe, “When I saw him losing in Cincinnati and thought yes, he’s human! Alcaraz is my favourite player to watch right now. He can do everything and he does it all so well”.
McEnroe also added that Alcaraz, the Spaniard was certainly busy over the summer, and he had no time to process any of it. There are lot of pressure that Alcaraz has to juggle daily. So, it may impact heavily on an individual.
All these factors make McEnroe wonder if the World No. 3 player will be able to handle it. One extended break like Djokovic imposed on himself might helped the Spaniard, but time will ultimately speak.
